Lecture: Translation, Metadata Repair, and Finno-Ugric Archives
From public domain to Spotify: understanding real-world access to culture
On 27 May 2026, I will give a presentation at the Pont Fordítva workshop series at ELTE on multilingual archival infrastructures, translation, and metadata repair in Finno-Ugric cultural heritage collections.
The talk explores how photographs, archival descriptions, and ethnographic collections can become disconnected from the communities, languages, and historical contexts from which they emerged — and how multilingual knowledge graphs and community-driven metadata enrichment can help reconnect them.
Using the Finno-Ugric Data Sharing Space (FUDSS) as a case study, I will discuss:
translation as a form of metadata repair, multilingual Wikibase infrastructures, interoperability between museums, archives, libraries, and Wikimedia projects, and the role of communities in improving archival visibility and interpretation.
The presentation includes examples from Estonian, Hungarian, Finnish, Mari, Seto, Võro, Udmurt, and Moldavian Csángó collections, with particular attention to dispersed archival legacies and multilingual cataloguing challenges.
